Through sin, man was separated from God, the Source of life; and, unless he avails himself of the provision that was made for his restoration, he must die the eternal death (extinction).(cf ); ; (first part). But he does not have to perish, unless he chooses to. He can find his way back to God, and enjoy eternal life, through Christ ( , , , ; . By dying on the cross for our sins, Christ redeemed us from the death sentence pronounced by the holy Law of God, which we have transgressed. More than that. Christ imparts to us divine power to unite with human effort. Thus, by faith in Christ (as we accept His life and death for us, and place ourselves under the guidance of His Spirit), and by repentance and regeneration, we regain that which was lost by our first parents.
The plan of redemption was motivated by the love of God for the fallen race. Full provision has been made for our salvation.; ; . The accusation that the Pharisees hurled against Christ, "This man receiveth sinners," is our great hope. ; ; ; ; , ; .
"Instead of going about to establish our own righteousness we accept the righteousness of Christ. His blood atones for our sins. His obedience is accepted for us. A. GRACE, FAITH, AND WORKS
Grace is "a gift of God"—an "unmerited favor."; , ; .
Grace is not a licence for man to continue in sin (, ; , ; ; ; ), but a provision, a power, for him to render obedience to God. Those who obey the Lord are no longer "under [the penalty or sentence of] the law." , . They are under the grace of Christ, that enables them to obey the commandments of the Almighty. ; (cf ); ; ; ; , ; ; .
"It is the grace that Christ implants in the soul which creates in man enmity against Satan. Without this converting grace and renewing power, man would continue the captive of Satan, a servant ever ready to do his bidding. But the new principle in the soul creates conflict where hitherto had been peace. The power which Christ imparts enables man to resist the tyrant and usurper. Whoever is seen to abhor sin instead of loving it, whoever resists and conquers those passions that have held sway within, displays the operation of a principle wholly from above."—.

"Through faith we receive the grace of God; but faith is not our Saviour. It earns nothing. It is the hand by which we lay hold upon Christ, and appropriate His merits, the remedy for sin. And we cannot even repent without the aid of the Spirit of God. The Scripture says of Christ, 'Him hath God exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.'. Repentance comes from Christ as truly as does pardon. How, then, are we to be saved? 'As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,' so the Son of man has been lifted up, and everyone who has been deceived and bitten by the serpent may look and live. One of the purposes of the plan of redemption is to cause us to cease trusting in our own works of righteousness.; ; ; ; , ; . The reason is that the only works of righteousness that we can do ourselves without Christ are sin. ; ; , ; . God intends to daily change our sinful hearts, then Christ produces His works in us. Our faith will be full of good works for "faith without works is dead." ; ; ; , ; . Christ's work of righteousness in our hearts renewed by the Holy Spirit becomes our righteousness. .
B. RIGHTEOUSNESS IMPUTED AND RIGHTEOUSNESS IMPARTED
When, by faith, the sinner comes to Christ as he is and confesses his sins, then the merits of Christ's life are credited in his behalf, and he is freely pardoned through the merits of the blood of Christ.; , ; , , , ; ; ; , .
"All that man can possibly do toward his own salvation is to accept the invitation, 'Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.' No sin can be committed by man for which satisfaction has not been met on Calvary. Thus the cross, in earnest appeals, continually proffers to the sinner a thorough expiation (MS 50, 1900).".
"When God pardons the sinner, remits the punishment he deserves, and treats him as though he had not sinned, He receives him into divine favor, and justifies him through the merits of Christ's righteousness. When the sinner believes that Christ is his personal Saviour, then, according to His unfailing promises, God pardons his sin, and justifies him freely. While justification is available as long as Christ is ministering in the sanctuary, it is only when a person is justified that the work of sanctification, a work of a lifetime, begins. With his consent and cooperation, the believer is sanctified by the Holy Spirit, through the truth, as he is led into all truth.; ; ; (cf ); ; (cf ); , . It is God's plan through sanctification to give man perfect victory over sin in his life. ; ; , ; .

"Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, or a day. It is a continual growth in grace. We know not one day how strong will be our conflict the next. Man has no power to regenerate himself.. It is only through his belief in the merits and sacrifice of Christ that he can be justified (pardoned), and it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit in him that he can be sanctified (made holy, or free from sin) ( ), as the mind or character of Christ is implanted in him. Justification and sanctification, working together, may be called regeneration or conversion—a process through which Christ saves us from sin. (cf ); , ; ; ; ; ; .

C. MAN'S PART

He who is righteous within is not hard-hearted and unsympathetic, but day by day he grows into the image of Christ, going on from strength to strength. He who is being sanctified by the truth will be self-controlled, and will follow in the footsteps of Christ until grace is lost in glory. The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the righteousness by which we are sanctified is imparted. The Power of the Will
"When Christ took human nature upon Him, He bound humanity to Himself by a tie of love that can never be broken by any power save the choice of man himself. Satan will constantly present allurements to induce us to break this tie—to choose to separate ourselves from Christ. Here is where we need to watch, to strive, to pray, that nothing may entice us to choose another master; for we are always free to do this. But let us keep our eyes fixed upon Christ, and He will preserve us. Looking unto Jesus, we are safe. Nothing can pluck us out of His hand. In constantly beholding Him, we 'are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.'."— .
"Pure religion has to do with the will. The will is the governing power in the nature of man, bringing all the other faculties under its sway. The will is not the taste or the inclination, but it is the deciding power which works in the children of men unto obedience to God or unto disobedience."—.

D. CHRISTIAN PERFECTION
The redeemed will stand without fault before the throne of God.; ; ; ; ; . Before the close of probation, all of God's people will be cleansed from every defilement. At His coming, Christ will not make them, but "find" them, blameless. , ; ; , ; ; , ; , .
"We stand in favor before God, not because of any merit in ourselves, but because of our faith in 'the Lord our righteousness.' Jesus stands in the holy of holies, now to appear in the presence of God for us. There He ceases not to present His people moment by moment, complete in Himself. But because we are thus represented before the Father, we are not to imagine that we are to presume upon His mercy and become careless, indifferent, and self-indulgent. Christ is not the minister of sin. We are complete in Him, accepted in the Beloved, only as we abide in Him by faith. Perfection through our own good works we can never attain. The soul who sees Jesus by faith, repudiates his own righteousness. He sees himself as incomplete, his repentance insufficient, his strongest faith but feebleness, his most costly sacrifice as meager, and he sinks in humility at the foot of the cross. But a voice speaks to him from the oracles of God's Word. In amazement he hears the message, 'Ye are complete in Him.' Now all is at rest in his soul."—.
E. NO SECOND CHANCE
The Bible teaches that the door of mercy—the time in which sinners are given an opportunity to obtain salvation—will not remain open forever. The time of probation will come to an end shortly before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. There will be no second chance after the close of probation.; , ; ; ; , ; ; .
"Should God save men in disobedience, after granting them a second probation, putting them to the test in this life, they would fail to regard his authority in the future life. Those who are disloyal to Christ in this world would be disloyal to him in the world to come, and would create a second rebellion in heaven. Men have the history of Adam's disobedience and fall before them, and because of this they should be warned against venturing to transgress the law of God. Jesus Christ has died in order that all men may have a chance to make their calling and election sure; but the standard of righteousness in this gospel age is no less than it was in the days of Adam, and heaven will be the reward of obedience."—Review and Herald, September 28, 1897.
