The United Republic of Tanzania is an East African country known for its vast wilderness areas. Here are found the plains of Serengeti National Park, a safari mecca (populated by elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, and rhinos) and Kilimanjaro National Park—home to Africa’s highest mountain. Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar and Mafia, with a marine park home to whales, sharks, and coral reefs. In 2024, these picturesque attractions drew 1.8 million tourists.
As of 2025, the population of Tanzania itself was over 71 million. Although there are a total of 126 local languages, the official languages spoken are Swahili and English. The nation is divided into 30 regions, 25 of which are on the mainland and 5 in Zanzibar. Key economic drivers include infrastructure development, mining, oil, and gas. Over 60% of the population is involved in agriculture, whose practices here are currently undergoing modernization.
According to worldatlas.com, among the religious groups represented in Tanzania, 35% profess various forms of Islam, 31% Roman Catholicism, 27% Protestantism, 3.1% other forms of Christianity, 1.8% indigenous religions, and the remainder profess no specific religion at all.
The message of reformation reached Tanzania through our brethren from Kenya. We were also helped by our German brethren. The General Conference is printing Sabbath Bible Lessons in the Swahili language through the Rwanda Union, near Tanzania. Swahili is spoken throughout all East African countries.
The work has now progressed to the point where we need to develop our headquarters and establish a school. We believe that Dodoma will be the best place for this project. Dodoma is the country’s fastest growing city and is now the new capital of the nation. We have purchased 12.4 acres and have already established a local church here. Our proposed project certainly has the potential to further the work here and especially to help our young people to study in peace, avoiding the difficulties currently faced in the public schools with regard to the Sabbath.
We appeal to all of our Sabbath School members around the world please to give generously to this project. Thank you in advance for your help. May God greatly repay your kindness toward His work in Tanzania!
Your brothers and sisters in the Tanzanian Mission
