Efficient Administration of Family Finances

by Elvis N. Camargo

Every financial choice can honour God, or quietly enslave us.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

One of the concerns in this period of history—one that many unfortunately do not pay attention to—is related to the poor administration of family finances. There is much counsel on this subject, yet few follow it correctly. We can learn important lessons by following divine guidance.

“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

This includes the efficient financial administration of the family. We can begin by organizing our financial life through a few simple but powerful principles: understanding exactly how much the family earns each month, the total monthly expenses, and any existing debt.

We glorify God when we choose to cut unnecessary expenses and avoid impulsive purchases. Not everything we want is necessary, and content-ment makes all the difference.

“Having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (1 Timothy 6:8).

Another important decision is to avoid creating new debt. “The borrow-er is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).

Debt takes away our freedom. If there are debts, the focus should be on paying them off. This requires discipline and consistency, without giving up along the way.

“The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again” (Psalm 37:21).

We should remember that all financial decisions should honor God. We must seek wisdom, maintain balance, and act responsibly with what God has entrusted to us.

Even if the amount is small, it is important to begin saving so that we are not dependent on credit in difficult times.

“The thoughts of the diligent tendonly to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want” (Proverbs 21:5).

In the end, the goal is to live with more peace, less pressure, and greater awareness—being faithful, organized, and grateful for what we already have.

“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful” (Colossians 3:15).
