Fiber has the potential to keep many diseases at bay. Let's make sure we get enough of it!

Importance of Fiber

For years, studies have linked a high-fiber diet with lower colon-cancer rates. We now know that fiber also helps to reduce our risk for metabolic diseases, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, ischemic stroke, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and even gallbladder disease.

There is no time to sleep. The time to watch and pray is right now. Christ poses the same question to us as He did to Peter centuries ago: “__________, sleepest thou? Couldest not thou watch one hour?”

After partaking of the Passover supper for the last time, Christ led His disciples to the Mount of Olives and into the garden of Gethsemane. This was no strange occurrence as Jesus often led them there and would spend hours in prayer, often for His disciples.

“On these occasions, after a season of watching and prayer, [the disciples] would sleep undisturbed at a little distance from their Master, until He awoke them in the morning to go forth anew to labor,” (Desire of Ages, p. 686).

The significance of the Lord’s Supper was not to divide the disciples into classes. It was—and still is—to unite hearts in humility and willingness to serve one another. Any contention that removes the focus from this solemn occasion is not of God but an obstacle placed by the enemy to distract God’s children from the serious times in which we live.

Christ’s earthly ministry was concluding. After years serving as a foreshadowing of the imminent sacrifice, the need for the Passover supper was also ending. The custom of a Passover supper was established when the Israelites were released from slavery as God had promised. The yearly commemoration served to remind the people of God’s faithfulness in the past and to point to His promise of delivering them from sin through the sacrifice of His Son.

Although a healthy diet and lifestyle are extremely important, there are other things we should know in regard to colon cancer prevention.

Significant interest is placed on diet, today. Many articles are published regarding what foods we should avoid, and much of the focus is geared towards advertising "anti-cancer foods". A study in 2007 published in the Canadian Family Physician Journal, reported that roughly 30% of cancer cases are related to poor dietary habits and that the risk of cancers involving the gastrointestinal tract is increased to 70% with a poor diet1.

The resounding lesson and theme of Christ’s ministry is love. It motivated the entire purpose of His life here on this planet. Here He lived and died—a sacrifice of love for you and me.

“But David said to Saul, “I, your servant, have been keeping my father’s sheep. When a lion or bear came and took a sheep from the flock, I would chase it. I would attack it and save the sheep from its mouth. When it attacked me, I caught it by its fur. I would hit it and kill it. I, your servant, have killed both a lion and a bear!” 1 Samuel 17:34-36.
